July 3, 2026 (NYC)– A Look at Ip Man: Kung Fu Legend (2026). Ip Man: Kung Fu Legend (2026), the latest film in a series of stories about the life and legacy of Bruce Lee’s legendary Wing Chu Master, Ip Man, hits the US market on July 14, 2026. Here is a synopsis and review of this Well Go USA release.

The thrilling follow-up to 2019’s Ip Man: Kung Fu Master, director Li Liming’s IP MAN: KUNG FU LEGEND follows the Wing Chun icon as he attempts to open his own martial club after leaving his police career behind. When a western boxing gym buys up all of the property belonging to the local martial community, it’s up to Ip Man to save this tradition from destruction. Dennis To returns as Ip Man in this action-packed follow-up.

 

REVIEW:

Taking up where Ip Man: Kung Fu Master left off, Dennis To resumes his role as the legendary Wing Chun teacher and eventual mentor to iconic Bruce Lee.

Like its predecessor, the movie is a well paced Kung Fu thriller, more than a historical biopic; however, Ip Man has become more of an iconic superhero than a historical figure, so this makes sense.   People worldwide cannot seem to get enough of Ip Man.  These films fill in the blanks about what Ip Man’s family life and friendships might have been, despite not having great transparency on this historically.

The film opens with a very visually interesting and engaging scene where Master Ip must endure three challenges in order to assume leadership of his school.  While this segment does not tie heavily into the main storyline it is a very fun way to get the film started.

The main storyline revolves around foreign interference in Hong Kong as the  Chinese and British attempt to vest control of land and property owned by the Kung Fu families in Hong Kong.  This pressure leads to trying to eliminate Master Ip as an obstacle to this expansion by framing him for murder.

The Direction by Liming Li is very good.  It helps that he Directed the 2021 Ip Man; Kung Fu Master, also starring Dennis To.  There is a strong continuity of look and feeling between the two films.

Dennis To may have been selected for the original role because he does a good job mirroring Donnie Yen from the worldwide film series; however, To has risen to the challenge to make the role in these movies his own.   While Yen plays Master Ip and To plays Yen playing Master Ip those lines are much closer here than in previous films.

As in the prior films, the martial arts choreography and fighting are plentiful and fun to watch.  Some great use of rain and elements in one of the fight scenes, and fire in another.  To’s Wing Chun translates well to screen.  The climactic fight scene in Ip Man: Kung Fu Legend has elements of some of the ones from the Yen Series, but highly watchable nonetheless.

This whole series of films has a strong emphasis on Nationalism, Patriotism, and unity against foreign influence in East Asia.  This film is no exception.  However, the message is not overly preachy, and does not distract from the story itself.

I recommend it highly.
