October 10, 2026 (NYC)-Operation Kabul is a Riveting Military Drama. Operation Kabul is the latest release from Well Go USA Entertainment, and it is filled with thrilling action sequences. This well paced and well Directed modern war film is very good.
Review:
People in the United States are familiar with the dramatic withdrawal of occupying forces from Afghanistan in the period of 2021. Operation Kabul, inspired by real life events, tells a very personal story of soldiers and civilians in the final hours of the occupation from the Hungarian perspective.
I have no familiarity, at all, with Hungarian filmmaking, but thanks to the good people at Well Go USA this film has international distribution. If Operation Kabul is an example of Hungarian filmmaking then I really hope to see more. This is really good filmmaking by any measure.
The film follows a group of Hungarian soldiers charged with the evacuation of 390 civilians from Afghanistan, some Hungarian and some European, before the Taliban takes over the Kabul airport. In a through line, the story deals with a very personal Hungarian soldier’s effort to convince and help a Hungarian doctor flee as the hospital and people she loves are decimated by the forces of the Taliban. The backstory here is well woven into the fabric of the storytelling. The actors and the main characters are all very realistic and all very likable.
This film is well written, well acted, and tightly Directed by Zsombor Dyga. The cinematography is very sharp in this movie. Operation Kabul kept me engaged, as a viewer, from moment one until the last scene. This is exceptional filmmaking because the reality is the viewer, essentially, knows what happened here if they followed the international press coverage surrounding these events. Despite having this understanding, the filmmakers still managed to keep the viewer riveted to the action. This is laudable.
I also love that the film has great action, great character development, and yet manages to avoid being excessively political. In fact, it is not very political, at all. What it does do is tell a war story with action from a humanitarian perspective. The filmmakers manage to palpably capture the fear of the Afghan people as this turnover was happening, and their understanding that the people left behind faced harsh judgment under the rule of the Taliban. This was heartbreaking in real life and the movie captures this sentiment.
I recommend this film.
The film is in Hungarian but there is a dubbed version. It is Not Rated and will be available on Digital November 3 .
