REVIEW:
Indonesian movies really gained prominence in 2011 with the prominence of Gareth Evans’ The Raid. A series of great Iko Uwais Indonesian action films followed and Indonesian solidified its place an international marketplace. Ghost in the Cell is a great Indonesian film brought to the international marketplace thanks to the good people at Well Go USA.
Ghost in the Cell is a very unique and crazy horror movie with a comedic twist. It is the story of a reporter who is framed for the grisly murder of his Editor-in-Chief and ends up in a maximum security prison, where dangers from the brutal prisoners are only matched by the sadistic prison guards.
The story turns from a violent prison picture into a violent and gory horror film when the demon that caused the reporter’s downfall is now eviscerating members of the prison population. The circumstances cause enemies to band together to strategize how to overcome this supernatural enemy.
The movie is very engaging and very well done. The Direction by Joko Anwar is very good. The film could have taking the turn from quirky and humorous to silly; however, Anwar did a good job of keep the guardrails on to create elements of shock and horror just when you felt like the film was getting too lightheaded. The characters are intentionally hyperbolic and cartoonish in many ways, but these elements serve the execution of the story. The cast is strong and the actors play off of each other in a way that is both engaging and comical at times.
I like this film, and highly recommend it. It is the perfect film to preview in the Halloween season, because it is a ghost and horror film, among other things.
The film has some very violent and disturbing images so I wouldn’t recommend it for younger family members. Ghost in the Cell is a fun adult watch.
Please stay for the credits. Without revealing anything they are well worth watching and give you a sense of the chemistry of the cast members on the set of the film and why it works so well.
