Forced to choose between his integrity and his freedom, Xue decides the only path forward is to fight back and hope that exposing these dangerous agents of chaos will be enough to set him free.
REVIEW:
The Butcher’s Blade is the newest martial arts, action release from Well Go USA coming out of China.
The film is a fast moving, martial arts crime drama that follows the story of a skilled, but low level officer who is summarily mistreated and ultimately framed for a major theft of disaster relief funds. The movie stars, Liu Fengchao, who does a good job in both the realm of carrying the lead and executing some dynamic and exciting martial arts action sequences throughout. He is an action star to watch, for sure.
The film, like many Chinese made films, has an underlying theme about corruption and the compromising of morality over the accumulation of wealth. One of the things that is unique here, for Chinese made films, is the complexity of the main character. It is more common for the lead in these Wuxia martial arts action films to be very unassailable in their morality in these films. That is not the case here; the lead engages in some brutal and questionable conduct in this film that works, but is much more akin to the moral complexity of South Korean, or Japanese leads. I really appreciated this aspect of the film.
The martial arts action and fight choreography is very high level. The film is littered with great and unique fight scenes. These include hand-to-hand and weapons based fight scenes. They are well filmed and fun to watch. This film is a visually fun watch.
The film is uniquely violent for Chinese martial arts films. This is not a bad thing. Quite the opposite. While many Chinese originated martial arts films have great action they stop short of realism in some of the action. This film does to hold back on the violence; although it is not gratuitous.
The Butcher’s Blade is the best of Chinese Wuxia Martial Arts action.
