January 9, 2024 (NYC)–   The Childe (2023) is a Chilling Good Time.  A Look at The Childe, an action-packed film of South Korean origin-available on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD January 16th!   Here is a synopsis and review of this Well Go USA Entertainment release.

SYNOPSIS:

In a desperate attempt to secure funds for his mother’s surgery, an amateur boxer searches for the wealthy estranged father he’s never met. But after a lead takes him from the Philippines to Korea, he is relentlessly pursued by a quirky yet highly dangerous man. As additional entities join in his pursuit and cause chaos, he will be forced to confront a shocking truth that may cost him his life.

REVIEW:

The Childe is a unique and wonderfully engaging, Korean action-packed thriller from Well Go USA.  The plot of the film centers around a Korean/Filipino heir to a dying Korean billionaire’s fortune. This character is adeptly played by Kang Tae-Ju, whose performance in this reminds me of Tony Jaa’s Ong Bak, in more ways than just his looks. “The Childe”  needs money to save his mother’s life, and this desperation leads him down a path to reunite with his mysteriously absent, and wealthy, father in Korea.

This attempted reunion makes him the target of multiple groups of people; all trying to kill, and/or kidnap him. The events around this attempted reunion lead him, and the audience on a frenetic chase that has him, and the audience guessing who he can trust.  The story and execution are smartly crafted.

The movie is violent and funny, in spots. The acting, filmmaking, and Direction are very, very good. Some of the flight choreography is a little grainy for my taste, but still good. There is a strange appeal to the array of devilish characters, even though they do really bad things.

The heart of the film, and its success, in my opinion, is the performance by Kim Seon-ho as the main adversary to just about everyone in the film.   This character is carved out as a deadly, but quirky, assassin with a personality that can not help but, at least, make you interested in what he will say and do next.   His character and performance, like the film, are very memorable.

Park Hoon-jung is the writer and Director of another great and unique Korean film, I Saw The Devil (2010).  It is no shock that he has hit the mark once again, with another Hollywood caliber film that will have you thinking about the film long after you have seen it.

This is another great Korean film.  I highly recommend it. It is best viewed In Korean with English Subtitles.
