Lone Samurai (2026) Movie Review

March 4, 2026 (NYC)-Lone Samurai Movie Review.  Lone Samurai  is the latest release from Well Go USA Entertainment to come out of the Japanese market, and it is an engaging and visceral martial arts drama.  Lone Samurai  debuts on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray & DVD March 17th.

Lone Samurai (2025), perhaps taking its name from the works of Miyamoto Musashi, tells the tale of a 13th Century Samurai stranded on a cannibal island and faced with a decision to take his own life, or those of his captors.  His solitary existence in this hostile world generates the title of the film.

This low budget action film was produced by Iko Uwais’ production company, and Directed by Josh Waller, who is no stranger to martial arts action films.  However, he is normally a producer.  Here he takes on the role of Director, Writer, Screenwriter, and Producer; making this a passion project.  Lone Samurai stars Shogen in the lead role.  He is little known in the West, but has starred in Japanese films, and has some very good martial arts presence.

The real highlights of the movie feature Yayian Ruhian, whose ubiquitous presence in modern martial arts films is always a victory for the viewer.  He has collaborated with Uwais several times, and appeared in John Wick‘s 3rd installment.  He is a vastly talented martial artist, and has a proclivity to play the villain.

The film’s cinematography and plot development remind me of another Well Go film starring Marko Zaror, Fist of the Condor, which I was a big fan of.  The film has an introspective feel and the main character’s mind and thoughts are integral to the storytelling in both.  It is a tight, watchable martial arts movie with unusual elements.

The film has some very dark and violent elements.   It is not for children, or the faint of heart, but the violence is not gratuitous.  It serves the story.   Uwais is no stranger to visceral movie brutality.   That may have impacted the decisions made here.

The fight choreography in the last third of the film is very good.   The film leads to a predictable, but welcomed climax of violence and revenge.  The weapons combat, as well as the martial arts sequences are well executed, and well filmed.

Well Go USA continues to distribute unusual foreign, martial arts films that others might not have taken a chance on.  These risks may not always work out, but they do with Lone Samurai.

I recommend this film.

The film is subtitled.
