REVIEW:
In the world of martial arts filmmaking bigger is not always better. Some of the best martial arts films of the last few years have been low budget imports. These films have little known stars, low budgets, but are founded in good stories and solid martial arts action choreography. Bangkok Dog, a new Well Go USA Entertainment release, is just such a film.
Bangkok Dog is a simple film about a US based Drug Enforcement Bureau that goes undercover in Bangkok to take down a drug Kingpin.
D.Y. Sao, channeling Bruce Lee and Bolo Yeung, does an adept job in the lead role. He plays a good, and dedicated, cop who becomes conflicted while undercover. As his mission proceeds he forms a strong bond with one of the cartel’s highest ranking members, creating the film’s strongest personal conflict.
The story and script are simple. The characters are well defined. The supporting cast does a good job of moving the story along and creating enough depth that the viewer cares about their outcome. Newcomer, Jenny Philomena Van Der Sluijs, is very watchable in this film as Sao’s partner in crime fighting, and romantic interest.
However, at the heart of this film’s strength is the continued, violent and well choreographed fight sequences. The stars, including Sao, and Brian Le are highly skilled martial artists and stunt actors. Their complex and unique fight sequences do a great job compensating for the budgetary constraints, which become apparent in the camerawork. The film has numerous high velocity fight sequences throughout, but like many martial arts films, the film’s fight climax was really well done.
I love that this film comes out of Thailand, a place not generally associated with great filmmaking.
I recommend this film, and look forward to future films from all those involved.
It is a violent film with adult content and themes.
